Private Equity and Venture Capital in India

Presented by the BVCA and the IVCA as part of the BVCA International Series

IVCA

Monday 4 July 2011

The BVCA International Series is now well established and following the success of the Brazil and Russia Forums plans are now being finalised for the next event that will focus on India. The BVCA is working in partnership with the IVCA who will bring a delegation of representatives from 14 Indian companies and the conference will bring together general partners from the UK and India along with institutional investors.

Following the legislative amendment by the Security and Exchange Board of India in 2000 allowing venture capital firms greater access to Indian companies the last decade has seen increased activity across a range for sectors particularly in infrastructure and power. India is now recognised as one of the largest emerging markets for equity finance and the relative insulation of the domestic banking sector has, to a degree, protected it from the impact of the global financial crisis.

Many BVCA members have a presence in India and this will be an opportunity to make new contacts and interact on a personal level with many of those directly involved in the strategy and development of the private equity market in India. We will be working with both the IVCA and our key supporters, Citi, Debevoise & Plimpton, Greenpark Capital and KPMG to invite key individuals.

Agenda

The agenda is being finalised in conjunction with the IVCA but is intended to address the issues relevant to fund managers, investors, advisers and policymakers.

Senior professionals will be invited to contribute and to participate in an agenda comprised of keynote addresses, case studies and panel sessions followed by Q&A. We hope to see lively discussions across a range of topics and, amongst others, on the key regulatory requirements e.g.

  • A macroeconomic overview of the Indian economy
  • Private equity and venture capital performance data
  • Investment experience from emerging market fund managers and investors
  • The exchange control regulations set by the Reserve Bank of India
  • The SEBI guidelines on the amount of foreign equity into certain sectors
  • The Government proposed change in the capital gain tax structure
