BVCA - the voice of long-term investment

BVCA Chief Economist Appointed

A Chief Economist and a Research Advisory Board brings added weight and expertise to BVCA team

Roger Kelly, formerly Research Adviser to the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, has joined the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association as its Chief Economist.

With a PhD in Economics, Roger’s previous roles include time at the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, Manchester University and, prior to that, Coopers & Lybrand where he trained as a Chartered Accountant.

This position has been created to bring greater strategic direction to the BVCA’s Research function and to deepen and extend the analysis of trends and issues relating to the Venture Capital and Private Equity business models and their impact on the economy.  Key relationships with Government, investors, academia, the general public as well as with the industry itself, will be significantly enhanced by more extensive, in-depth and detailed research outputs from the BVCA.

Roger Kelly’s appointment is directly linked to another BVCA initiative - a new BVCA Research Advisory Board; a body which will provide guidance and advice as well as thought leadership.  It will comprise of some 6-9 leading academics and practitioners, recognised internationally for their research excellence, experience and insight into the venture capital and private equity industry.  The Board’s remit is to meet some 3 times a year and to provide critical oversight to the research work undertaken.  The Board will also ensure that research themes cover a pan-European and global perspective, reflecting the markets where the BVCA membership is investing.  Richard Wilson of Apax Partners will be Chairman.

Simon Walker, Chief Executive of the BVCA, commenting on these developments, said:  “One of the BVCA’s key roles is to provide better insight into how the private equity and venture capital business models contribute to the economy.  By beefing up our research capability we plan to have an increased set of data to tell these stories more effectively.”
