The BVCA, along with the ACCA, BBAA, LINC Scotland and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, is happy to announce the publication of the second annual report on the Business Angel Market in the United Kingdom. This work was led by Colin Mason (University of Strathclyde) and Richard Harrison (Queen's University of Belfast).
The 2009/10 report covers 245 investments from BBAA networks, raising a total of £98.3mn for small and growing businesses. Scottish angels made a further 78 investments totalling £27.5mn. Deal sizes ranged from less than £25,000 to over £1mn, but most were in the £50,000 - £500,000 range. While most (55%) investments only involved angels, they were also minority investors in one-third of all deals. Solo angels tend to dominate where the total angel investment is small. Most companies funded through BBAA networks were raising finance for the first time from that network, and over half of the investments were in companies with five or fewer employees.
