CompStudy is a collaborative effort that includes academics at the Harvard Business School and Ernst & Young amongst others. While this is the first year surveying the UK, CompStudy is the longest running, most comprehensive survey of its kind (now in its 10th year and covering more than 25,000 executives at 5,000 startup companies in the US). Participants in the survey will receive free access to the results when published. And, of course, all data will be kept strictly confidential-only aggregate results are reported. This study will allow you to analyse how executives at your portfolio companies are being remunerated compared to other VC-backed firms in the UK and the US.
The survey consists of a web-based questionnaire that must be filled out by a member of your portfolio company's executive team (preferably the CEO or CFO). The survey should take around 45 minutes to complete. And to get a feel for the kind of data collected and reported, here are sample reports from the 2008 survey in the US for technology and life sciences companies.
This is an important initiative for the BVCA and we ask that you encourage your portfolio companies to take the survey. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact the BVCA Research team at research@bvca.co.uk or visit the CompStudy website.
