Everyone can play their part

You don’t need to have an ESG function to make a significant contribution to ESG issues and this is what the awards hope to capture this year.

and Judge, BVCA Excellence in ESG 2021

The BVCA's Excellence in ESG awards reflect the rapidly evolving Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) landscape and capture the efforts of both General Partners (GPs) and their portfolio companies on progressing the ESG agenda. The awards criteria have been re-defined to outline areas of significant improvement and best practice and every GP and portfolio company has the opportunity to showcase what they have done over the last 12 months.

ESG factors are increasingly important to both investors and consumers and global government policies are changing fast to reflect this. GPs therefore have an opportunity with these awards, to raise their profile with investors seeking to understand who is committed to ESG at a firm level, and portfolio companies have the opportunity to showcase what they are actually doing to drive ESG awareness and strategy within their business. Further, with these awards, the BVCA can raise awareness of ESG issues more broadly within the industry but also with key external stakeholders.

You don’t need to have an ESG function to make a significant contribution to ESG issues and this is what the awards hope to capture this year.

For example, this could include social issues arising from the pandemic, such as how you have ensured employee and customer safety and well-being, or how you have implemented new remote working practices.

You could highlight new protocols or procedures that you have put in place at the GP level to embed ESG thinking across the investment cycle, discuss systems you have adapted or developed to capture and record data, or document the work you have undertaken to understand your climate risk or carbon emissions across a fund and the mitigating strategies you have put in place with the portfolio to reduce these. You could also demonstrate how your portfolio is tackling the increasingly important subject of Net Zero emissions and the future strategies they are considering to do this.

Equally valuable would include measures you have put in place to ensure good governance structures and board level ESG visibility and ownership, including modern slavery and anti-bribery and corruption policies and registers reviews, or data protection policies or how you are making a difference in diversity, equity and inclusion across your business and the portfolio that you manage to ensure that the employee base across the GP and its portfolio better reflect the communities in which they operate and the customers that they serve.

Every GP, whether large with established ESG practices, or small and just starting their ESG journey, can take part in the awards and we look forward to receiving your submissions over the next few months.
