Case Studies

Real-life examples of previous attendees on BVCA Training Courses.

Below we have provided examples of the experiences attendees have had on BVCA Training courses, from influencing their career direction to helping them integrate into a network that will support them throughout their working life.

Foundation

Starting Out: 0-18 months

Adam Chirkowski, Investment Manager, Albion Ventures

Where I started...

Why did you choose to go into PE/VC?

I started off at Rothschild doing M&A advisory for 5 years. I changed to PE/VC/other because I wanted to be directly involved with the decision making and growth of companies rather than being an advisor. Once you identify a potential investment and go through the process of making that investment, you then follow it through and become part of that company, experiencing how it grows and trying to help make it successful yourself.

What I want to do...

What are you trying to achieve?

I wanted to become involved with identifying and growing successful companies from their early stages through to becoming mature operational businesses. The fun bit is identifying an opportunity in a marketplace (across a range of sectors) and identifying the right team/ company who can take advantage of it.

How BVCA Training helped...

Why did you choose to do a BVCA training course?

The training course is a great blend of theory and real life experiences. The people giving talks/ workshops have all been through real situations from which the theory develops both on the upside and the downside. It is also a great forum for meeting the people who are doing similar things in the market.

Where am I now...

How has BVCA helped you?

It helps with your understanding of situations you come across day to day but more importantly it’s about the people you meet. Since the course I have bumped into those same people in working situations and we have all sent on opportunities to each other which may not have been right for our organisations, but suited someone else’s. It’s the best networking you can do.

Would you recommend BVCA Training to others in a similar position?

Yes.

Legal Agreements in PE

Experienced: 18+ months

Liam May, Investment Manager, NVM

Where I started...

Why did you choose to go into PE/VC?

Before working in private equity I qualified as an accountant working in corporate finance and also worked for an investment bank. In both these roles I was exposed to a variety of transactions, but it was the work with PE houses that I always found the most enjoyable. Working with entrepreneurs and management teams looking to grow their businesses was very exciting.

What I want to do...

What are you trying to achieve?

At NVM we try to help management teams realise the inherent value in their business as well as drive them to fulfil its potential. The ultimate goal is to help management teams realise their ambitions and generate excellent returns for our investors, if I can help them do this in some way then I can leave the office happy!

How BVCA Training helped...

Why did you choose to do a BVCA training course?

For those starting out in private equity the work of lawyers and the drafting of documents can be complex. Key negotiation points need to be carefully understood and considered and while I had picked a working knowledge the BVCA Legal Agreements in Private Equity course focused in on the important areas of each transaction. The input by specialist corporate lawyers really added to the learning material.

Where am I now...

How has BVCA helped you?

I’m currently an Investment Manager with NVM Private Equity. The BVCA provide an invaluable training resource as well as a social network to meet others working in the PE/VC community.

Would you recommend BVCA Training to others in a similar position?

Absolutely.

Skills for the PE/VC workplace

Support Team Courses

Katie Morton, Office Manager/PA, Dunedin

Where I started...

Why did you choose to go into PE/VC?

I became a PA in the Private Equity industry 6 years ago after working in the Construction and Property industry for several years. Private Equity seemed to be an extremely interesting and varied industry to move in to and it was the best decision I ever made, accepting a permanent role at Dunedin! It is great to work for people with such integrity.

What I want to do...

What are you trying to achieve...

I want to be able to support my team in the best possible way whilst also maintaining a good work/life balance. I also would like to continue working for Dunedin for many more years to come!

How BVCA training helped...

Why did you choose to do a BVCA training course?

I chose to do the “Empowering the Support Team” course because I felt that it would be beneficial in improving my communication skills and I also felt it important to do such a course with other PAs/EAs or people from the same industry. It really helped to share experiences and made me realise that I am extremely lucky to work for Dunedin and the team I support. All in all a great experience and quite cathartic too! [I think for many it felt like a therapy session!]

How did you decide this was the best way?

We are encouraged to do a course or some sort of training every year and I decided that it would make sense to do a course that is tailored towards the industry I work in. The BVCA course and format appealed to me straightaway.

The BVCA Course has helped me become much more assertive and ready to take on even more challenges at work. I really do feel that it has empowered me more too!

Where am I now...

Would you recommend BVCA Training to others in a similar position?

I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending a BVCA course, particularly one that is run by Sheryl Haddow. Sheryl is an amazing course leader and she made the 2-day course extremely rewarding and fun too. Sheryl is also a very warm and engaging person who is clearly an expert in her field and I hope that I am lucky enough to attend one of her courses again in the not too distant future. I also made some great friends too and learnt some very useful tips from Sheryl and some of the other course delegates and these tips and advice have already been put to very good use!
