The Sustainability Committee supports the BVCA by shaping members’ knowledge, building policy positions and promoting policy asks on the sustainability agenda. This includes wider net zero, climate change, social and impact investment issues as well as other relevant topics.
The Committee also plays a key role in empowering industry members to integrate sustainability and or impact investing approaches into their business strategies by offering practical guidance and insights, creating tangible value for companies.
The Committee focuses on five core sustainability themes: green finance innovation; impact investing; sustainability regulation and reporting; diversity, equity and inclusion; and sustainability value creation.
The Committee objectives are as follows:
Assist the BVCA in guiding members to integrate sustainability considerations into their business approaches to drive best practice and value creation by addressing environmental, social and governance factors. The Committee must ensure this dialogue is strategically aligned for limited partners, general partners and portfolio companies.
Assist the BVCA in the promotion of the impact investment (or “profit with a purpose”) sector in its development in the UK, seeking to influence government policy and strategy around this sector as well.
Engaging with key stakeholders such as Government, Civil Servants, Regulators, other relevant BVCA committees and industry bodies to influence sustainability-related policy, regulation and legislation ensuring private capital is well understood and considered appropriately including through sharing examples of best practice and information about the economic and social impact of private capital investment.
Ensure the member base is equipped with the knowledge and tools to develop their sustainability approaches by supporting collaboration with key stakeholders facilitating knowledge share, developing guidance and signposting and promoting best practice whilst avoiding duplication of existing guidance or initiatives. This includes keeping members informed about relevant legislative and regulatory changes and their implications for responsible investment and or impact investing.
The BVCA Governance Handbook provides directors, members and employees of the BVCA with a summary of our governance structure. This includes information on how our Council, Committees and Advisory Groups are constituted and is supplementary to the Articles of Association.
The Committee comprises a core Sustainability Committee of member representatives and five associated Taskforces aligned with the Committee’s focus and objectives. The Sustainability Committee will meet four times a year and the Taskforces will meet at a minimum twice per year and as required beyond.
The core Sustainability Committee and each Taskforce have a Chair, with the Chair of the core Sustainability Committee having overall responsibility. The Taskforce Chairs will be selected from the core Sustainability Committee body to ensure connectivity and flow of communication. The core Sustainability Committee and Taskforces will each have a designated BVCA Sustainability Policy lead.
